Millar urges a cleaner sport for future generations

ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France: Britain's David Millar, who won the opening 4.7km prologue of the Paris-Nice here on Sunday, said doping problems needed to be resolved to save the sport for future generations.

The 30-year-old Scot, who returned from a two-year drugs ban in June 2006 after admitting to using banned blood-booster EPO, said he wanted to help fight drug use as he was to get back to the pinnacle of the sport in five years.

"I want to be an example to young people," he said after winning on the streets of the south west Paris suburb. "I want to talk to them so they know they don't need syringes to win.

"There is so much work to do in cycling at all levels, and not just getting rid of doping."

Trezeguet given three-match ban for elbow

ROME: Juventus striker David Trezeguet was given a three-match ban by the Italian football league's disciplinary commission on Sunday.

The 29-year-old France international was found guilty of elbowing Brescia's Fabiano Santacroce in the face in Juve's 3-1 Serie B defeat on Saturday. Trezeguet was charged with violent behaviour after trial by television.

Despite their second defeat of the season, Juventus, who were demoted to the second division from Serie A and given a nine-point penalty for their role in the Italian match-fixing scandal, remain top of the table.

Schild regains World Cup lead with seventh slalom win

ZWIESEL, Germany: Austria's Marlies Schild scorched to her seventh slalom victory from the nine held so far this season to regain the lead of the overall World Cup.

Schild clocked a two-leg time of 1min 36.67sec to leave Sweden's Anna Ottosson and world champion Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic tied for second place at a massive 2.23secs adrift.

The Austrian, who is the partner of reigning men's World Cup overall champion Benjamin Raich, now has 1302 points, and leads compatriot Nicole Hosp, on 1287, and American Julia Mancuso, who is third on 1251.

With four races still to be held this season, in the finals next weekend at Lenzerheide, Switzerland, the race for the prestigious women's crystal globe is heating up nicely.

Inzamam has no plans to retire

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica: Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq is adamant that he will not follow other greats into retirement after the World Cup.

Australia's Glenn McGrath will quit all formats of cricket following the event, while West Indies captain Brian Lara is expected to retire from one-dayers and play only tests.

With Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya and India's Anil Kumble possibly also heading into one-day retirement, there were rumours that Inzamam could follow suit but he quashed such suggestions.

"Definitely I will continue to play as long as I feel I can give the performances and as long as there are no deadlines given (from the board) for any player to end their career," Inzamam told reporters on Sunday.

"If I can keep performing well, doing a good job for my country that will be good enough for me to keep on playing."
