Growing from strength to strength
As one of Singapore's largest metal recyclers, Union Steel has an increasingly important role to play in the region's recycling industry as countries in Asia grapple with environmental or "green" issues.
"In the age of globalization, the environmental aspects of doing business are becoming more important and the 'green' concept is spreading throughout society," says the company's chief executive officer (CEO), Ang Yu Seng. "This is where Union Steel plays an indispensable role as metal recycling is not simply about regenerating value. It is also about protecting our environment.
"I believe this business will go on forever as metal recycling can help meet the demands of economic and infrastructure development. We have worked hard to establish ourselves as a market leader in Singapore. However, we are not resting on our laurels. We are also working to grow our sales network into China and the rest of the world," he said.
A total of 31 percent of Union Steel's 2006 revenue came from China, and this figure is set to increase as the Chinese market plays an increasingly important role in the group's operations.
Founded in 1984 and incorporated in Singapore in 1991, Union Steel is one of the few companies in Singapore providing fully integrated recycling services including collection, processing and packing for both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals.
Ang added that Union Steel is growing organically while at the same time looking out for more partners and joint ventures in order to expand its global business.
Union Steel currently serves more than 500 global customers, comprising trading houses, smelting factories, steel mills, metals recycling companies and metal fabricators.
To ride the infrastructure and construction trend and accelerate expansion into the booming offshore oil and gas marine sectors, Union Steel announced its acquisition of Singapore-based JP Nelson Holdings Pte Ltd and its group of subsidiaries.
