Orchestra brings future stars

What's newRenowned conductor Hu Yongyan (pictured) will lead the EOS Orchestra Academy from Beijing's Central Conservatory of Music to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year at 8 pm tonight at the Shanghai Concert Hall.

Hu founded the EOS Orchestra Academy with top graduates from the country's music conservatories last year.

Rather than maturing soloists, EOS is fostering future members of symphony orchestras in China and abroad by focusing on group development.

Meaning "dawn" in Greek, EOS brings together future stars of the best orchestras in China and the world, Hu said.

The Shanghai concert is sponsored by Duetsche Bank.

Avon to reward best service, business idea

Avon China launched its Hello Tomorrow Award yesterday, the International Women's Day, in Beijing, to help Chinese women find success in the business world. From March to December 2007, the award will provide 10,000 yuan ($1,280) every month to the female entrant with the promising idea to develop a community service or business to help women gain economic independence. Any female, aged 18 or older, in China can apply for this award through www.avon.com.cn.

"We are very excited to launch Hello Tomorrow, which brings a new day for Avon and a new day of opportunity for women in China," said S. K. Kao, president of Avon China.

Women currently account for only 20 percent of China's entrepreneurs, figures show.

Dash of humor by Jazz-rock groups

What's newHaving won numerous jazz and rock prizes, ambient instrumental groups Bandapart and Emil de Waal+ are touring China and will perform at 7 pm tonight at Peking University.

Emil de Waal+ is led by the charismatic Danish drummer (pictured) of the same name, but this isn't Bon Jovi. His powerful beats lead the three-piece of keyboard, drums and guitar with a laptop thrown in for good measure.

A band of polished performers, Emil de Waal+ also dab their shows with a touch of humor. More atmospheric than their tour mates, Bandapart has assembled a dreamy, melodic repertoire. The Danish group consists of Jakob Bro on guitar, Jeppe Gram on drums, Jonas Madsen on bass, and Soren Kjaergaard on keyboards.
