Musical gives new color to ancient painting

Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) painter Zhang Zeduan's work Along the River During Qingming Festival is well-known for its panoramic scene that represents a broad cross-section of society from rural dwellers to urbanites.

Now the work has been adapted into a musical of the same title by the Kaifeng Song and Dance Ensemble of Central China's Henan Province.

The large-scale production involves a cast of 140 people and blends Peking Opera with acrobatics. It will be put on in Beijing's Tianqiao Theater on March 7 and 8, as a tribute to the ongoing 5th Session of the 10th National Committee of CPPCC.

"We hope to bring the audience back to the time of the Song Dynasty through this work," said the musical's director Huang Lei.
