In the virtual world, it was like a massacre. Thousands of hours, if counted in terms of surfing per hour, were lost by a vicious killer disguised as a panda holding three joss-sticks.

The mysterious virus sneaked into the computer system of Sheng Ying, a financial consultant in Beijing, on the night of January 27, as it had to millions of other computers in homes and offices across China.

"It happened suddenly, my computer began rebooting itself continuously. Then the monitor began to show numerous icons of a little panda holding three joss-sticks," she said. "After reconnecting the system, I found all my hardware data had disappeared."
