NANNING - A man linked to the explosion of a firecracker workshop that killed 5 people has surrendered to police in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, local authorities said on Thursday.

The explosion occurred at 1:08 pm Wednesday at a private house-turned firecracker workshop in Gongguan township, Hepu county, leaving 5 people dead and 10 injured, according to a government statement.

Xu Xidao, the owner of the workshop, surrendered around 1:00 am Thursday. Xu's parents and 11-year-old nephew were among the five people killed in the accident.

All firecracker production companies have been asked to stop their work and receive safety inspections, and local police will further tighten the crackdown on illegal firecracker makers in the county, according to the  statement.
