XI'AN - Local authorities in a northwestern Chinese city Tuesday ordered an inspection of areas prone to geological disasters after a deadly rain-triggered landslide killed 17 people there Saturday afternoon.

The key areas that should be thoroughly checked are residential communities, mining factories, villages, schools and particularly brick kilns on the loess tableland, the Municipal Bureau of Land and Resources in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, said in a statement.

Saturday's landslide buried several workshops and left 17 workers dead and 15 missing in Baqiao, a suburban district of Xi'an.
