BEIJING - China's meteorological authority said Saturday that North China will see heavy rains over the next three days while a drought will persist in the country's southern regions.

Heavy rains are expected to fall in some parts of northwestern China and areas along the Yellow and Huai rivers, the National Meteorological Center said in a statement posted on its website.

The accumulated precipitation in most of the regions will reach 10 to 35 millimeters, while some parts may even see 40 to 60 millimeters of rain in the coming three days.

However, a drought will continue to plague most parts of South China.

The center said that temperatures in parts of Sichuan Basin, the municipality of Chongqing, Guizhou province and several areas south of the Yangtze River will see temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius over the next three days.

Some of these regions may experience temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius, the center said.

High temperatures in Sichuan Basin and Chongqing Municipality will not drop until Tuesday, according to the statement.
