The law enforcement authorities cracked 1,480 drug-dealing cases in the past year and captured a total of 59.06 kg of heroin, according to Fu Qiang, director of Xinjiang's narcotics control committee.

Drug smuggling into the autonomous region was becoming an increasing problem, said Fu, who is also a member on the standing committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Illicit drugs are smuggled into Xinjiang from both the Golden Triangle and the Golden Crescent, Asia's two top narcotic producing regions.
