A woman surnamed Li has been barred from living with her husband of a year by her mother in Jinshui district in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province.
Li's mother refuses to let her daughter live with her husband because the couple has not organized a wedding banquet, although they got their marriage certificate a year ago.
According to local custom, the pair will not be considered a married couple if they have not had a wedding banquet.
Because Li is not allowed to live with her husband, Li's mother-in-law has lent out their new apartment.
To settle the problem, Li and her husband are now planning to organize a wedding banquet to "officially announce her marriage" during the coming May holidays.
