Power generation output grows 6.2% in April

China's electricity generation output grew 6.2 percent year-on-year to 399.4 billion kilowatt-hours in April, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday.

The overall power generation output during the first four months was about 1.59 trillion kilowatt-hours, up 3.8 percent year-on-year, the bureau said.

Affected by the economic slowdown, the annual growth rate of the country's power generation output in the last year was at a low level of 4.52 percent.

Analyst said the higher growth rate of the power generation output in April was mainly caused by the low benchmark last year.

"In the past decade, China's electricity demand growth rate was usually double the GDP growth rate," said Li Li, senior analyst at ICIS C1 Energy, a Shanghai-based energy information consultancy. "Thus, the power generation growth in April indicates that the country's GDP growth is slowing down."
