I remember at the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) being particularly taken by some of the quieter gar- dens, often built around water, away from the main lake. Of course no visit to the park is complete without a cruise by barge across Kunming Lake. There I saw the Marble Boat close to the western foot of Longevity Hill. Dating originally from 1755, it was said to be constructed in a style imitating the sailing boats of Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) but rebuilt in 1893 under the orders of Empress Dowager Cixi.
