Driving back down the valley, another of Beijing's great historic sites occupied an extensive area in nearby hilly Changping County, the Ming Tombs. At the foot of Tianshou Mountain lay the mausoleums of thirteen Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) emperors. Our approach was along the 'Sacred Way' lined with large statues of animal-like creatures to the vast Changling Tomb of Emperor Zhu Di and his Empress Xu.
