White Bird Lake plans to build a wetland park in 2018 combining the functions of sports and leisure in a natural habitat.
The park will occupy an area of 60 square kilometers, including the lake and surrounding mountains, to afforest the mountain district and build a "lung" for the city.
The government work report of the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district) mentioned that the district will strengthen protection of wetlands and further restore the environment in White Bird Lake, Dabai Mountain and Chiyan Mountain.
According to Wang Huijun, director general of the planning bureau of Toutunhe district, Toutunhe will produce a scientific overall design of White Bird Lake New District with high standards to speed up the construction of the demonstration zone.

The wetland park will consist of eight different zones with varying functions including a ranch, a trek zone, an ecological forest, a flower and bird center, and a photography center. It will take around five years to complete construction.
The district will improve the vegetation coverage around White Bird Lake and improve the environment in the coming two years. White Bird Lake wetland covers an area of 2010 mu (134 hectares), of which 558 mu (37.2 hectares) is an ecological restoration zone.
In 2017, the district planted 200 mu of protection forests including ash, Russian olives, Chinese scholar trees and ulmus pumila.
White Bird Lake is home to great varieties of wild species; currently 150 varieties of birds have been recorded.
White Bird Lake New District is positioned as an ecological new town. The district will further promote integrated development of the environment and the industrial park.
