The Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe District) will invest more than 4.8 million yuan ($700,000) into a large population database later this year.

Currently in the initial phase of construction, the database will provide a resource for population, corporations, natural resources and geospatial information, according to Feng Tingting, an official from the social service and management bureau of the development zone.

"An overall population database can benefit different local government departments to accurately analyze population information, including the public security department, civil administration, human resources and social security," said Feng.

Natural resources and geospatial information are fundamental for e-government affairs. The database will provide a sustainable and comprehensive platform information sharing platform for the local government.
