( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2020-02-24

The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in 1964. It was the first institute in China to specialize in laser science and technology.

SIOM is a comprehensive and high-tech optics and laser institute that mainly focuses on modern optical and laser sciences, the development of large-scale laser technology, and laser and optoelectronic applications.

It specializes in high-power laser technology, strong field physics, high-intensity optics, information optics, quantum optics, laser and optoelectronic devices, and optical materials.

SIOM consists of 14 research units including one key national laboratory, one CAS-China Academy of Engineering Physics joint laboratory, four key CAS laboratories, and one key Shanghai municipal laboratory.

It has over 900 employees, including nearly 700 senior researchers, and nine distinguished SIOM scientists have been elected academicians of CAS or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It also currently has over 500 students pursuing Ph.D. and master's degrees.

SIOM has received 48 national level awards, 128 CAS awards, and 135 Shanghai municipal and ministerial level awards for its scientific and technological achievements. By the end of 2018, 2,573 of SIOM's 4,002 patents had been officially authorized.

International cooperation and academic exchange are very important to SIOM. The institute has carried out joint research with institutions from over 10 countries, including Belarus, Germany, Russia, France, Canada, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Romania, the United States, Japan, Israel, and the United Kingdom. It has also successfully promoted academic exchange through various fellowship programs. Every year, around 200 international visitors, including a number of Nobel laureates and heads of state, visit SIOM or participate in short-term cooperative programs with the institution, and around 100 researchers from SIOM go abroad for international conferences or short-term collaborative research projects.
