The National Liver Cancer Scientific Center in Jiading district of Shanghai is to go operational soon, medical authorities announced on Dec 25 during a meeting on interventional medicine in the district.

With total investment of 400 million yuan ($61.6 million), the center covers a combined floor area of 26,000 square meters. It consists of six laboratories, three assisted research and development platforms. The laboratories feature diagnostic marker screening, etiology analysis, molecular network regulation, drug target R&D, cell therapy and evidence-based medicine. The platforms cover a resource preservation and data link application center, an animal center and a pilot scale test platform.

The center aims to lower the chances of having liver cancer and its fatality rate in China. The medical authorities said that when the center starts its operation and adopts interventional therapy, the incidence and death rate of liver cancer are expected to fall.

Experts said that interventional therapy is a kind of minimally invasive operation and the therapy may be widely used in liver cancer treatment in the future.

Statistics show that China now has been a country with world's highest liver cancer incidence and death rate. So, having such a scientific center is the need of the hour.
