There was a ceremony for a science park project at Shanghai’s International Automobile City, in the Jiading district, on Dec 16, with local government and Tongji University officials taking part as yet another symbol of cooperation between the district and the university.

Ma Chunlei, the district Party secretary, addressed the gathering and said that the university’s intellectual background will add new vitality into the automobile city, and, that the park will help the university’s and the district’s development, then noted that the local government will provide a full range of services to ensure its success.

The district, in fact, signed a cooperation agreement with the university, back in June 2009, with the first phase of construction covering 144,000 square meters. It will go into operation in 2015.

Tongji Science Park is a national science park and as such will qualify for preferential industry policies, in this case, new energy vehicles. It can also make use of the university‘s advantages to build a multi-function complex with office buildings, hotels, businesses, and apartments. It will also provide housing for university teachers and talented science and technology professionals.

Officials taking part in the ceremony were the head of the district government Gao Yun, deputy head of the district Fei Xiaomei, and the university’s Zhou Zuyi and Jiang Fuming.
