In a move to implement a fresh environmental protection law, China's top legislature will hear the central government's report on the environment in April, an official of the legislative body said on Friday.

Whether the environmental protection work of the State Council was finished or not has been put on the supervision agenda of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress this year, Pu Changcheng, a member of the NPC's Environmental Protection and Resources Conservation Committee, said during a press conference.

"It will be the first time that the top legislature will hear and discuss the environmental work report and will become a regular move, urging governments to abide by laws and handle administrative affairs in the environmental protection by rule of law," Pu said.

"Under the revised law to the environmental protection law, effective on Jan 1, 2015, annual environmental work report and related projects should be submitted to the legislature for review, which is also the enforcement of lawmakers to play roles in the supervision of governments," Pu said.

"Such supervision and efforts from the public, I think, can effectively protect our environment," Pu added.
