People in Beijing crowded supermarkets to stock up on food and water for fear of more heavy rains raging the city this week, Legal Daily reported Tuesday.

"I heard there will be more heavy rains this week so I plan to stock some food at home," a woman surnamed Zhao told the reporter. She had to eat instant noodles at home when the heavy rain hit Beijing last weekend.

Supermarkets such as Carrefour and Wumart have witnessed an increasing flow of customers this week. Two thirds of the cashiers in the supermarkets were still open after 8:30 pm while normally only half would still be open at the time, according to the newspaper.

Bottled water, cooked food, bread, cookies and instant noodles are among the list of hot items. According to a Wumart staff member, weekday sales increased 30 percent, bringing it up to the same amount as weekends.
