"Based on its 175 registered museums, over 2.3 million collections, thousands of annual cultural and museum exhibitions, and an audience base of more than 40 million, Shanghai would conduct its grand museum project during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period," Liao Yanling, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, said during a news conference earlier in July.

According to Liao, the city will spare no effort to build itself into a globally renowned city of museums.
