China unveils innovative uniforms for 2026 Asian Para Games, prioritizing comfort and accessibility

Chinese para swimmer Jiang Yuyan pulled on a new jacket and immediately noticed the difference as the shoulders fit comfortably, and the zipper could be operated with one hand.

"When I make big movements, I don't feel restricted at all. It's very comfortable," Jiang said on Monday at a ceremony in Beijing unveiling China's delegation kits for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games.

China's delegation received its official uniforms and equipment from sportswear maker Peak Sport Products. Seven kit series featuring a "Dingsheng" pattern were unveiled, with eight para athletes modeling the new designs.

The fifth Asian Para Games will be held from Oct 18 to 24 in Nagoya, Japan. China's delegation has entered the final stage of preparations for the Games.

The kits incorporate phoenix motifs inspired by the image of a phoenix rising anew and turning toward the sun, reflecting the athletes' efforts to push beyond physical limitations and challenge themselves.

The collection includes outfits for competition, training, ceremonies and travel, as well as shoes, backpacks and suitcases. A specialized competition kit was also made for China's wheelchair basketball team.

Front zippers and trouser openings feature quick-release magnetic fasteners that can be operated with one hand. Signature strips inside the clothes and prominent name tags on bags are designed to make personal belongings easier to identify.

Jiang said the details showed that the needs of para athletes had been taken seriously.

"There's also the magnetic design," she said. "It snaps together easily, and I can smoothly pull the zipper all the way up without having to struggle with the zipper head."

"It makes me feel that even the subtle details that we might easily overlook have been noticed," she said.

Jiang also sees the Games as a chance for Chinese para athletes to show their determination and connect with competitors from across Asia.

"We hope to show the world the spirit of contemporary Chinese para athletes — that we are determined, that we fight hard, that we dare to step onto the field and perform at our best," she said.

Wheelchair basketball player Tang Mengfan said the comfort and mobility are key to a match kit.

"The clothes definitely need to be a little loose, breathable and quick-drying," Tang said. The new basketball jersey is loose enough not to restrict his shoulders when shooting, he said, adding that it dries quickly after training and does not cling to his body.
