Inaugural young scholars workshop on world China studies held in Shanghai

Over 100 young scholars and senior journal editors gathered at Tongji University for the 1st World China Studies Youth Academic Workshop in Shanghai on Tuesday.

Organized by the Shanghai Association for World China Studies, and co-hosted by Tongji University's International School and the Institute of China Studies of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the landmark event sought to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue and innovation in the field.

Keynote addresses from leading experts mapped out shifting frontiers in the field. Topics ranged from the methodology of global Sinology and the rise of the Global South in China research to the international communication of China's governance model.

Speakers included Zhang Xiping from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shen Guilong from SASS, Gao Xiaolin from Fudan University, Tang Lei and Zhou Jin from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Seven parallel sessions were held in the afternoon, covering themes such as the international significance of Chinese modernization, traditional culture communication, digital-age approaches, and cross-civilizational dialogue. Senior editors from several academic journals provided on-site critiques of young scholars' presentations.

A roundtable titled "Editors Meet Young Scholars" concluded the workshop, focusing on research topic selection, academic standards, and publishing practices in the digital era. Outstanding paper awards were also presented.

Participants noted that the event succeeded in promoting cross-generational and multidisciplinary exchange, injecting fresh intellectual energy into the field, and fostering deeper mutual learning among civilizations. The workshop is expected to become a recurring platform for emerging researchers in the field.
