China's COVID-19 wave peaks and declines, no major threat detected
China's recent COVID-19 wave peaked earlier this month and has since begun to trend downward, said Wang Fuzhen, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, on Friday.
She noted that the decline is more pronounced in southern provinces and the overall intensity of the current wave remains comparable to that of the past two years, with the vast majority of infections presenting as mild cases.
With no detection of variants posing a major public health risk, she added that the wave has not significantly disrupted the broader medical order.
Data released by the China CDC on Thursday showed that the positivity rate for COVID-19 among influenza-like illnesses at sentinel hospitals stood at 21.2 percent during the week beginning Aug 10.
The epidemic currently remains at a moderate level of transmission and has plateaued within a peak range, it said.
