Non-motor vehicle fatalities drop in Beijing following revamped rules

Following Beijing's revised non-motor vehicle rules, which took effect on May 1, the rate of e-bike riders wearing a helmet in the city rose to an average of 92.5 percent across metrics, authorities said on Tuesday.

The number of non-motor vehicle traffic fatalities for the month came in at 17 fewer than in May 2025, with e-bike-related deaths decreasing by 15 across the same time frame, Beijing Daily reported.

The decrease has contributed to an overall downward trend, with the proportion of fatal e-bike accidents among all non-motor vehicle accidents from January through May falling from 35 percent in 2025 to 30 percent this year.

Helmet usage in urban districts reached 93.6 percent, and that number exceeded 95 percent in some commercial areas.

On Friday, the Beijing government issued a letter of thanks to citizens for their cooperation with traffic regulations, particularly the proper wearing of helmets.

The letter acknowledged the public's sense of responsibility in enhancing road safety and expressed appreciation for the collective effort, noting that such compliance contributes significantly to a safer urban environment.
