Water surge leaves four dead in Chongqing

Four people were killed in a water surge accident on Sunday at a hydropower station in Fuling district, Southwest China's Chongqing, local authorities said on Monday.

According to the local emergency management bureau, the accident occurred at 9:05 am on Sunday when a sudden rupture happened in the pressure steel pipe used for water diversion at the Qingyandong Hydropower Station, a Level-4 station located in Fuling's Qingyang township. According to previous reports, two were killed, and two remained missing.

Following the incident, local authorities promptly initiated emergency rescue operations. By 6:50 pm, the other two missing individuals had been located and confirmed dead.

The station is operated by the power generation branch of Chongqing Xingfu Power Development Co.

Post-accident arrangements and an investigation into the cause of the accident are underway.
