Public security and cultural authorities in multiple Chinese cities have recently taken strong enforcement actions against illegal activities like paid escort services uncovered in some so-called "private cinemas" that reportedly offered inappropriate services in violation of the law.

In Chengdu, Sichuan province, the city's public security bureau and culture, radio, television and tourism bureau said in a joint statement on Sunday that they had formed a special task force after reports from the public and media highlighted regulatory violations at some private cinemas.

The investigation found that two such venues in the city's Jinjiang district had failed to conduct real-name registration for overnight guests as required and were ordered to rectify the issue. Another venue in Wuhou district was shut down for organizing paid escort services. Authorities are looking into whether other illegal activities were involved.

Earlier this year, Chengdu police conducted three rounds of undercover inspections at more than 20 private cinemas across the city. Two venues were found to be involved in pornography-related violations, leading to administrative penalties for eight individuals and the closure of both establishments.

Authorities said they will maintain a zero-tolerance stance, strengthen coordinated supervision, and continue to purify the social environment and cultural market. Business operators were urged to strictly comply with laws and regulations.

Similarly, in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, the Yanta district public security bureau announced on Sunday that it had launched a probe into a local private cinema following online reports alleging it provided escort services.

Four operators of the venue, surnamed Pan, Wen, Zhang, and Wang, were criminally detained for organizing paid escorts under the guise of "service packages". Three individuals who provided such services faced administrative penalties. The case remains under investigation.

In Sanya, Hainan province, the city's public security bureau reported on Sunday that the operator of a private cinema, a 32-year-old man surnamed Yang, had been criminally detained for involvement in pornography-related illegal activities. Three female employees, aged 19, 20, and 25, received administrative penalties. The legal responsibility of the property's landlord is also being reviewed.

Authorities in all three cities warned that lawful operation is the fundamental requirement for all businesses, and any attempts to conceal illegal activities would be thoroughly investigated and severely punished.
