Lan Tianli, former deputy Party chief and former chairman of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China and dismissed from public office for serious violations of Party discipline and national laws, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission announced on Thursday.

The CCDI and the NSC had filed a case for investigation and review into Lan in May this year. The investigation found that Lan had violated the new development philosophy and high-quality development requirements, and failed to fully implement the Party Central Committee's major decisions and deployments — instead making compromises and modifications.

He engaged in forming cliques within the Party, fostered personal influence, resorted to opportunism and intrigue, associated with political swindlers, and resisted organizational review.

Additionally, he illegally accepted banquets, improperly selected and appointed cadres, and accepted gifts and cash. He failed to exercise proper supervision and education over his family members, used his position to seek benefits for others in project contracting and cadre selection, and appointment, and illegally accepted huge amounts of property in return.

Lan, 63, is a Zhuang ethnicity and a native of Guangxi. He started working in 1980 and joined the Party in 1985. His entire career was spent in Guangxi Zhuang. In November 2011, he began serving as vice-chairman of the regional government. In 2015, he was appointed a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region Committee.

In January 2018, he became chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region Committee. In 2021, he took up the posts of deputy Party chief of the region's Party Committee and chairman of the region's government.

His illegal gains have been confiscated. His suspected criminal issues have been transferred to the procuratorial organs for examination and prosecution, along with the relevant property involved. The decision to expel him from the CPC is subject to confirmation at the plenary session of the CPC Central Committee, according to the CCDI and the NSC.
