China's State Council has recently approved the establishment of the Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve.
"Huangyan Island is the only oceanic atoll in the South China Sea, providing diverse habitats for a wide variety of marine life," said Professor Yang Hongqiang from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
