According to China Railway Shanghai Group Co, on May 1, the Yangtze River Delta railway network handled a record 4.268 million passenger trips, surpassing the previous record of 4.19 million set on April 4 this year.

Favorable weather and the extended May Day holiday spurred strong demand for medium- to long-distance interprovincial travel within the region, particularly for trips under 1,500 kilometers.

The surge was driven mainly by tourism and family visits, reflecting significant growth in rail travel. Since the holiday transport period began on April 29, the railway network has seen consistently high passenger volumes, with 10.797 million trips recorded by May 1, averaging around 3.599 million daily.

To accommodate the surge, the Yangtze River Delta railway authorities optimized operations by adding 469 extra trains and operating 424 double-length high-speed rail services, and boosting capacity on routes between popular regional destinations.
