Despite challenges from extreme weather, including heatwaves and typhoons, this year's hairy crabs have successfully reached the market with local government support. The total crab yield is expected to reach around 9,900 metric tons, according to the local industry association.
A new traceability label with upgraded technology will be introduced this year. Consumers will be able to identify the crabs' specific origin by label color and trace its authenticity by a QR code, ensuring they purchase genuine crabs from Yangcheng Lake.
The local government plans to introduce improved crab varieties and organize a series of tourism activities around the crabs, aiming to make a signature symbol of the region.
