In Shahezhuang village of Anyang, Henan province, a team from a local power supply company is conducting a thorough inspection of electrical equipment.

“We use infrared thermometers, ultrasonic detectors and drones to check the transmission lines and eliminate the safety hazards promptly, with the aim of ensuring a stable power supply,” said Zhao Xiaoguang, member of the team.

According to Zhao, with a new round of cold wave recently sweeping across Central China, the State Grid’s Anyang power supply company has ramped up efforts to secure the power grid amid the cold weather, as well as to meet the rising power needs brought by the upcoming Spring Festival.

The company strengthens both control and analysis of electrical load, making sure the power grid is functioning properly. It also sends staff to visit the customers regularly to get a full picture of their needs, said Zhao.

Besides, Zhao said the company has set up an emergency response team, which is on duty 24/7, and has prepared all kinds of emergency supplies. Adhering to the principle of “restore power first, repair later”, the company is able to restore power quickly whenever there is a power failure.

The company will continue to pay close attention to the impact of the cold wave and further improve its services accordingly, allowing local people to enjoy the Spring Festival holiday with no worries, Zhao added.

Yuan Jiahai, professor at School of Economics and Management, North China Electric Power University, said with extreme weather events occurring more frequently in recent years, China must take effective measures to alleviate the structural contradiction between power supply and demand caused by them.

The country should make full use of weather forecast models and production planning models to predict power demand and make necessary preparations in advance, improving climate resilience of the power grid, said Yuan.
