A teacher in Hubei province has been criticized for leaving an inappropriate remark on a student's homework, prompting attention from local education authorities.

In a picture circulated online, the teacher wrote "The worst in the whole class, are you an orphan? Is there nobody to take care of you?" as a comment on a student's homework.

On Wednesday, Xiangyang's Fancheng district education bureau confirmed the incident in a statement after an investigation. The remark was left by a teacher on the homework of a seventh-grader at Xiangyang Zhugeliang Middle School.

The incident has sparked anger among netizens, many of whom expressed sympathy for the student and condemnation for the teacher's behavior.

One netizen said that "poor academic performance can be attributed to many reasons, and if the teacher does not have the ability or patience to help, at least they should not humiliate the child."

According to the statement from the education bureau, the school has communicated with the student's parents and criticized the teacher involved. The teacher has apologized to the parents and the student, who have expressed understanding and forgiveness.

In response to the incident, the school held a special meeting targeting teaching ethics and professionalism to ensure all teachers strictly abide by disciplines in their teaching.
