International approach urged on global human rights assurance

Mutual understanding and cooperation of the international community based on an open mind are essential in human rights protection, global experts and officials said at a forum in Beijing on Wednesday.
The remarks were made at the Forum on Global Human Rights Governance, which was attended by more than 300 officials and experts from nearly 100 countries and international organizations, including United Nations agencies.
"Universal human rights are the natural rights of everyone. ... The international community should pay close attention and actively cooperate in necessary measures so that each country protects the universal human rights of mankind," said Woo Su-keun, chairman of the Korea-China Global Association.
Fabio Marcelli, former head of the Italian Institute for International Legal Studies of the National Research Council, said that international cooperation is of primordial importance in order to satisfy global human rights since a concerted approach among different countries is necessary in order to cope with the many challenges of globalization.
Experts also highlighted challenges faced today as some Western countries have applied economic, military and political pressure on other countries under the guise of human rights.
Muhammad Usman Iqbal Jadoon, director-general of the United Nations Division of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said all countries are committed to promoting human rights protection, but the world is now seeing some Western countries including the United States use human rights as a political tool.
"We are against that. (Human rights protection) should be not done in a political manner but in an objective manner. And we should do this through cooperation and collaboration, not through confrontation," he said.
In this regard, the official said China has set a role model in human rights protection for developing countries.
"The remarkable social economic turnaround and development that China has achieved is nothing short of America. Lifting 800 million people out of extreme poverty in such a short span of time directly contributes to the promotion of the human rights of Chinese citizens. It's a remarkable achievement."
The forum is jointly hosted by the Information Office of the State Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the China International Development Cooperation Agency.
