Cyberbullying condemned after high school girl's speech goes viral
The local cyberspace administration and police have stated their commitment to tackle an alleged cyberbully targeting a high school senior in Sangzhi county, Hunan province.
On a gathering held Feb 24 to mark the 100-day countdown to the national college entrance exam at Sangzhi No 1 high school, a female student was elected as representative to give a speech and motivate her fellow pupil.
The video of her speech soon went viral after local media uploaded it to social media.
Though most found the speech invigorating, others focused on her facial expressions and vicious posts started to surface on Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, attacking her appearance.
The comments did have a negative effect on her mental state, but she was back to normal after psychological counseling from the school, a teacher from the school told Jimu News.
As of Tuesday, 116 posts were deleted and 87 accounts were suspended due to the attacks on the girl, according to Sina Weibo.
