New Zealand shot put great Adams retires

Two-time Olympic women's shot put champion Valerie Adams of New Zealand has announced her retirement at the age of 37.
Adams also won Olympic silver and bronze medals and was a four-time world champion, a four-time world indoor champion and three-time Commonwealth Games champion.
One of 18 children of a Tonga-born mother and England-born father, Adams is a sister of the Memphis Grizzlies basketball star Stephen Adams. Her sister, Lisa Adams, was a shot put gold medalist at the Tokyo Paralympics last year.
She announced her retirement at a news conference on Tuesday.
"I'm here to share with you all that I'm officially hanging up these size 14 throwing shoes," Adams said. "After winning my bronze medal in Tokyo, I contemplated whether to embark on another campaign."
Adams won first Olympic gold medal at Beijing in 2008. She retained her Olympic title at London 2012, was second at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and third in Tokyo last year when her friend and longtime rival Gong Lijiao of China won gold.

Medvedev overtakes Djokovic in rankings

Daniil Medvedev officially moved up to No 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday, overtaking Novak Djokovic to become the 27th man to hold the top spot since computerized rankings began in 1973.
Medvedev, a 26-year-old from Russia who won last year's US Open and was the runner-up at this year's Australian Open, rose from No 2.
Djokovic slid down one place after having participated in only one tournament in 2022 because he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19. He was deported from Australia and not allowed to try to defend his title at Melbourne Park because he is not inoculated-and has said he won't get the shots, even if he needs them to be able to play elsewhere, such as the French Open or Wimbledon.
Medvedev is the first player other than Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray to get to No 1 since February 2004, when Andy Roddick was there.
Medvedev is also the first new No 1 since Murray in November 2016 and the third Russian man to lead the rankings, following Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin.

Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has renewed his contract with second-division club Parma through the 2023-24 season-meaning he plans to play until he's at least 46.
Buffon held up a Parma shirt with"2024" printed on it together with Kyle Krause, the club's American owner, at a news conference on Monday.
The 44-year-old Buffon joined Parma in June more than a quarter century after beginning his legendary career with the team.
Buffon's previous contract was due to expire in June 2023.
Buffon had his first international success with Parma by helping the team win the UEFA Cup in 1999.
He was a key player in Italy's run to the 2006 World Cup title and won numerous trophies with Juventus.
Parma was relegated last year after finishing last in Serie A in its first season under new American ownership.
