Customs officers bust milk powder smugglers
Officers from Guangzhou Customs recently detained 15 suspected smugglers after cracking down on a major milk powder smuggling case valued at more than 1 billion yuan ($153.85 million) in a special operation launched in cooperation with other mainland law enforcement agencies.
According to a statement released by customs officials on Thursday night, officers late last month busted four gangs that had been active in smuggling foreign milk powder into the mainland in an operation launched simultaneously in Shanghai; Shaoxing, Zhejiang province; Wuhan, Hubei province; Changsha, Hunan province; and the Shenzhen special economic zone.
The gangs smuggled the foreign milk powder into the mainland through express mail service and some illegal cross-border e-commerce platforms in previous months, the statement said.
In Wuhan alone, customs officers seized more than 170,000 cans of foreign milk powder that had evaded legal compliance procedures in a warehouse owned by a local illegal cross-border e-commerce company.
Guangzhou Customs immediately established a special task force to investigate the case through intelligent customs and big data after it was reported that the four gangs were active.
A total of 178 customer officers in 30 groups participated in the operation, which was launched after a thorough investigation, the statement said.
