The permanent elderly resident population of Beijing will reach 5 million by 2025, a senior government official said on Friday.
At a news conference, Sun Liguo, deputy head of the Beijing Association on Aging, said Beijing will enter into a medium aging population trend in 2025.
"Beijing's elderly population will increase by 1 million during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), with a growth rate higher than the previous plan period," he said.
According to the association, Beijing had 3.71 million permanent elderly residents at the end of 2019, accounting for 17.2 percent of all permanent residents of the city.
