Late Jota winner takes Liverpool top of the Premier League

LONDON -- An 85th minute goal from Diogo Jota completed Liverpool's fightback from a goal down at home to West Ham United to send Jurgen Klopp's side to the top of the Premier League ahead of Everton's game away to Newcastle on Sunday.

Liverpool went into the game without Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho and Klopp named Nathanial Phillips to partner Joe Gomez in the heart of his side's defense.

West Ham took the lead after just 10 minutes after Gomez's poor clearance was pounced on by Pablo Fornals, who drilled home off the base of the post.

Mohamed Salah leveled from the penalty spot after he had been caught on the calf three minutes from the break and Jota scored the winner five minutes from time after an excellent pass from Xherdan Shaqiri.

Jota had earlier seen a goal ruled out by the VAR, but he has now scored in his first three home games since joining from Wolves, while Liverpool equalled a club record of 63 league games unbeaten at Anfield.

Kyle Walker's 28th minute goal from long range was enough to give Manchester City a 1-0 win away to Sheffield United in the opening match of the day.

Sheffield keeper Aaron Ramsdale kept his side in the game in the first half with several good saves and the home side came close to sneaking an equalizer 20 minutes from the end when John Lundstram hit their best chance of the game just over the bar.

After the game Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola used his press conference to say there was no chance of him returning to FC Barcelona and that he wanted to remain with Manchester City.

Chelsea enjoyed a comfortable win away to Burnley thanks to goals from Hakim Ziyech in the 26th minute, Kurt Zouma after 63 minutes and Timo Werner with 20 minutes left to play.

New Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy has now conceded just one goal in six appearances and was hardly tested by a Burnley side that slips to the bottom of the table.

Friday night saw first half goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Daniel Podence give Wolves a 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace, who ended with 10 men after a late red card for Luka Milivojevic.
