Xi'an elects new mayor

Li Mingyuan was elected mayor of Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, on Monday.
Li pledged allegiance to the constitution after the decision was announced by the third plenary meeting of the fourth session of the 16th Xi'an People's Congress.
Born in August 1965, Li comes from Wuqi county in Shaanxi province and has a doctorate degree from Xidian University.
Li started his work as an employee of a communications company in March 1991. He joined the Communist Party of China in May 1999.
From March 2015 to March 2018, Li took the position of deputy Party chief and mayor of Weinan city of Shaanxi province. In January, he was appointed deputy Party chief of Xi'an and became acting mayor of Xi'an in February.
Shangguan Jiqing, Xi'an's former mayor, resigned in November 2018.
A newsreel from CCTV on Jan 9 revealed Shangguan was given a two-year probation within the Party and demoted to a non-leading position.
