Macao population reaches more than 650,000
MACAO - The total population in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) reached 653,100 at the end of last year, with the female accounting for 53.0 percent of the total, the SAR's statistics service said on Tuesday.
Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that the elderly population (aged 65 and over) made up 10.5 percent of the total, up by 0.7 percentage points year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the proportion of adult population (aged 15-64) dropped by 1.0 percentage point to 76.7 percent. The ageing ratio rose by 4.1 percentage points year-on-year to 83.0 percent, indicating a continuous ageing of the population.
In 2017, a total of 6,529 live births were delivered, down by 617 year-on-year. The sex ratio of newborns was 107.5, corresponding to 107.5 male babies per 100 female babies. The mortality decreased by 128 year-on-year to 2,120 in 2017.
Non-resident workers totalled 179,456 at the end of 2017, up by 1,818 year-on-year. Following the completion of several large-scale entertainment facilities and residential projects, the number of non-resident workers in construction dropped by 12.8 percent year-on-year.
