The Yao factor

Following hot on the heels of the retirement of his No 11 Houston Rockets jersey, Chinese hoops legend Yao Ming was elected chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association in February, becoming the first CBA chief to be drawn from outside government ranks. Yao has since masterminded and implemented a series of wide-ranging reforms for the league as it moves towards a more market-oriented professional approach. Meanwhile, rising Chinese star Zhou Qi followed in Yao's footsteps by making his NBA debut with the Rockets after winning his first CBA title with Xinjiang Flying Tigers in March.
