Amateurs enrich Games

To inspire greater mass sports participation throughout the country, the 13th Chinese National Games held in Tianjin from Aug 27-Sept 8 allowed amateurs to compete in 19 events including badminton, table tennis and marathon for the first time in its 58-year history. Other major changes introduced to the quadrennial event included the policy to accept foreign athletes with Chinese ancestry and Chinese citizens living abroad to compete with a view to strengthening national cohesion through athletic exchange.
