Algerian president appoints constitutional council chairman

ALGIERS, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has appointed current Minister of Justice Tayeb Belaiz to chair the Constitutional Council, in replacement of Boualem Bessaih whose term had expired in September 2011.
Quoting a statement of the President Office, the local APS news agency reported on Friday that "President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has signed a presidential decree related to the appointment of Mr. Tayeb Belaiz as head of the Constitutional Council to replace Mr. Boualem Bessaih, in accordance to article 164 of the constitution. "
The Constitutional Council is the highest judicial authority in the North African nation. It is authorized to make a law in force and validate election results.
