Nepal's population reaches 26 million

KATHMANDU - Nepal's population is 26,620, 809, announced the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) of Nepal on Tuesday.

The CBS released the preliminary report of the National Population Census 2011 Tuesday, saying that the annual growth of population in Nepal is 1.4 percent.

The preliminary result reveals that the population of male and female in Nepal is 12,927,431 and 13,693,378 respectively.

The Terai belt, south of Nepal, constitutes the highest proportion of the population followed by the Hill and Mountain belt. More than half of the total population of the country, or 50.2 percent, lives in Terai followed by the Hill and Mountain belt that constitutes about 43 percent and 7 percent of the total population respectively.

The urban population constitutes about 17 percent of the total population.

The result also said that Kathmandu district has the largest population.

The CBS conducted the 11th National Census from June 17 to 27 across Nepal with the slogan "Include all, No Double".
