SYDNEY - As many as 1,000 extra officers are due in Perth in Western Australia (WA) soon as part of the largest security operation ever mounted by the state police during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October, WA Police said on Wednesday.

"Operation Demille" is planned for the CHOGM which begins in WA' s capital Perth on October 28.

Police said 700 officers from eastern Australia and New Zealand and another 300 regional police officers would travel to Perth for the three-day event.

Police spokesman Samuel Dinnison told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that the logistical planning has been completed.

"It's also included borrowing two helicopters, one from Victoria and one from New South Wales."

Dinnison said locals and recruits, including special and mounted police, will work a total of 30,000 individual shifts over the period and all will be on equal footing.

"All eastern states officers and those from New Zealand will be sworn in as WA police officers meaning they'll have the same powers as local police officers while they're here," he said.
