UN stresses importance of legislative elections in Haiti

SANTO DOMINGO: The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) on Thursday stressed the importance of Haiti's upcoming legislative elections, to be held on February 28.

The elections would be critical to consolidate the democratic process in Haiti, said Minustah's chief Hedi Annabi.

Annabi remarked that if those elections failed, the progress made during the last four years to again bring stability to Haiti would be called into question.

However, according to Annabi, the success of the elections will allow stability and development to reinforce each other.

The success of these elections "demands the full commitment of all the political actors, the civil society and citizens who will vote," Annabi said.

Annabi added that the Minustah would provide logistic support to the elections.
