The new volcanoes, discovered by US volcanologists Minard Hall and Patricia Mothes, are located between Cosanga and Baeza regions, some 75 km southwest of Quito, the capital city.

According to Hall and Mothes, at least one of the newly discovered volcanoes is potentially active.

Hall said there are possibilities of finding more young volcanoes in the zone. Therefore he, along with other researchers, would look over the area to determine if there are more volcanoes.

Ecuador has more than 50 volcanoes distributed in different mountain ranges, Hall said.

The new volcanoes were named Centro Pumayacu, Lavas de Bermejo, El Dorado, Domos de Huevo de Chivo and Centro Cosanga.
