WASHINGTON -- US President George W. Bush nominated James Cunningham to be US ambassador to Israel, according to a statement of the White House released on Wednesday.

Cunningham currently serves as Consul General of the United States in Hong Kong. Prior to this, Cunningham has served as deputy US representative to the United Nations and deputy chief of mission in Rome, the statement said.

Cunningham's nomination will have to be approved by the US Senate. If confirmed, he will be the third ambassador to Israel during the Bush administration.
