Scott Fitzpatrick and Daniel Hartzog, the lawyers who act for the 17-year-old, who has not been named, appeared to support his position. 'All of the conversations that took place between our client and her co-workers, including Ms Lafave, were customary, age-appropriate in nature, non-offensive and typical,' they said in a statement.

Lafave now works as a receptionist at her mother's hairdresser's. Other terms of her probation include sex offender treatment, random drug testing and 200 hours of community service, which she has completed.

She pleaded guilty in 2005 to lewd and lascivious behaviour as part of a plea bargain after Florida authorities charged her with having sex with a 14-year-old student. Her plea negated the need for a trial, during which the victim would have been called to give evidence.

But her former husband, Owen, criticised the decision to spare her prison. 'She is a sexual offender and, if it were a male, she would have definitely gotten jail time,' he said at the time.

During the blaze of publicity around the case, photos of her during her days as a model featured on television news shows and websites. When it initially appeared that Lafave would be jailed, her lawyer made headlines by saying that 'to place Debbie into a Florida state women's penitentiary, to place an attractive young woman in that kind of hellhole, is like putting a piece of raw meat in with the lions'.
